PREFACE
This handbook is written primarily for human resource professionals and those fulfilling that role, who have difficult decisions to make about how resources are to be allocated to the people-dimension of the business. The handbook should also prove useful to employee assistance professionals. With new forces now confronting employee assistance program operations, the profession's response will play a critical role in determining the shape, size, and direction of the employee assistance programs of the future.
The purpose of this handbook is to provide an informative and provocative discussion of several of the most critical issues concerning employee assistance programs today. The perspective of each of these discussions is that of the human resource manager in a medium-to-large size organization. Nevertheless, there are important insights, too, for human resource managers of smaller businesses everywhere.
Our comments are based on the current literature, ideas, and controversies of the employee assistance field and other related research areas. We believe that the information presented is up-to-date; however, the field continues to evolve. New research and findings are published monthly and revisions of the material presented in this handbook will no doubt be required periodically. We hope that the handbook will serve readers of this and future revisions well.
